Three years ago April I found a nice sturdy wood desk at Goodwill for $40. I’ve been through the flimsy flat pack stuff from big box stores, and even a not-so-bad piece from Ikea, but I always wanted something that was built for the ages. This looked like a good candidate, so I declared NP and got it.

As it sat in the Goodwill store with stuff piled on and around it.

This thing is very heavy, and sits on two big pedestal feet instead of four legs. I had to stand it up on one end to get it through the door into the house, and there was no flex it in at all. The veneer has some cracks and peeling, but it’s solid wood underneath.

I found a couple of identifying marks inside a drawer.

The original seller, or manufacturer, or both?

The manufacturer? At least the brand.

It turns out the company goes back a few years. I don’t know how to tell when it was built, but it seems possible it’s a good bit older than I am. I found a site with a little history: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Apparently nice examples go for quite a lot of money. Here’s one that helps date mine, it has the same drawer pulls:

Nice! Anyway of forgoing the veneer and finishing the hardwood? Also as a furniture snob I really can’t get behind calling this a mid century modern piece. It is mid century, but really what the modern design movement was trying to get away from.

Just one of my little pet peeves.

That is the truth right there!

I’m always on the hunt for vintage camera lenses whenever I stop by a Goodwill, and I’ve been pretty lucky. I’ve found a Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 lens, a 70-205mm K-mount lens from Vivitar, and a Spiratone Pluracoat FD 20mm f/2.8 lens. I like to use these lenses with my modern camera equipment to make some really interesting shots:

Believe it or not, it is surprisingly easy to adapt older lenses to your current camera equipment!

I got both of my dressers at my local goodwill store as well. Think I paid $25 each or something for them. Solid wood, in pretty much great shape, and they match (though I bought them at different times, they are part of the same collection)

Veneer is easy to fix. Buy a sheet of veneer & cut pieces to fix the areas needing fixing, stain them to match, the seal it up.

So true. I bought a similar desk at a goodwill surplus warehouse place. Solid wood in great shape. Drawers were a little tight, but after getting it in the house they were perfect. Must’ve been the damp warehouse causing them to stick. Love having a big wide desk area. I think I also paid $40

My cousin and his wife were giving a tour of their house and new furniture. i couldn’t believe what they paid for a bunch of venear shit.

After my grandmother died, nobody wanted any of the furniture. it was all solid mahogany, so I grabbed it. they were about to throw it in the dumpster. years later. I called up my friend when I was moving, “why do you need a third person” he asked. “fuck you _____” when we went to pick up the dresser.
